The Year 2026 Declared the Age of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. However, their visibility has noticeably increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To grasp this phenomenon, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming looks especially strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues enable a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year so far.
When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be entering a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
